Lambda Center Houston

How it Began and Flourished

A radical new idea began taking root in the United States during the mid-1970’s: 12-step meetings for alcoholic homosexuals. Traditional 12-step groups were shocked, denouncing the whole idea of special-interest meetings. Nevertheless, the bold new concept inched its way forward, one day at a time, despite all the resistance.

Naturally, the national gay media took note of this new phenomenon. In 1976, the Advocatetold its readers where they could find such meetings. They had been started in just four cities at this time. Houston was one of those pioneer cities.

This is a brief review of how this movement took root in Houston and how it evolved into the Lambda Center Houston today.
